Early papers relate chiefly to the estate of William Payne (d. 1782?) of Mile End, London, Eng., captain of the merchant ship, "Priscilla." Also include correspondence, 1862-1865, and other materials of Rawleigh William Downman (1830-1882) of the Black Horse Troop and as adjutant of the 4th Virginia Cavalry, C.S.A., concerning the battles of Antietam and Cedar Creek, and the Appomattox Campaign, Confederate prisoners held at Old Capitol Prison in Washington, D.C., and encampments in Augusta, Madison, and Orange counties, Va.; and letters, 1863-1864, of John Joseph Downman (1835-1873) while serving in the 4th Virginia Cavalry, C.S.A., in the Valley of Virginia.

The 4th Virginia Cavalry was organized in September 19, 1861 and reorganized in April, 1862. After the reorganization, the regiment was under the command of Williams Carter Wickham (1820-1888). The regiment, assigned to General Jeb Stuart's, Fitzhugh Lee's, and Wickham's Brigades, participated in every major battle and campaign that involved the Army of Northern Virginia, from the 1st Bull Run to Appomattox Court House.
